CUSTOM SADDLES At Hillman Saddlery, "custom" means a great deal more than just choosing the length of seat, or size of stirrups.

Because the saddle tree that goes into your saddle is made right here in our shop, we can make the little adjustments not available from the other shops. Like 1/4 inch variations in gullet, seat and cantle dimensions. Varying the angle of both swell and cantle.

And then we get to the saddle: variations can include size and shape of fenders, stirrup leathers, skirts housings, rigging, hardware, tooling, size of cantle binding, padded seat, tooling pattern, conchos, silver and many more.

Your height, weight, and intended use is taken into consideration before cutting any parts. There is little or no use to having a fender that you cannot adjust or stirrup leathers that are too short or long.

So when we say "custom" we are serious!

SADDLETREES
Each tree is made right here in our shop, from the finest materials, and then checked on our horses before being covered. The fiberglass cover is much stronger than rawhide and allows us to eliminate bridging and air spaces that occur with rawhide covered trees. This means that you sit closer to your horse for a more "balanced" feel and it allows you and your horse to feel each other better.

The SADDLE Once the tree is ready, only the finest leathers, woolskin and hardware are used. It is because of this, that I see saddles I made in the early '70's still being used at ropings. Attention to detail is also important to me. I try to make the saddle I am working on better than the last one! All parts are hand cut, cased and fitted. All our carving is completely hand done. Stirrup leathers are turned and shaped while wet. All edges are hand rubbed and dyed. All saddle parts are oiled prior to assembly.
As you browse through our site, you will probably notice that the stirrup leathers are turned and the fenders hang correctly. The bulk of the "break in" time for a Hillman saddle is just to lay the woolskin back down.(Woolskins are "Electrified" to be sheared evenly)
Break in time is usually a few hours rather than months.
